EM-Data: Empathy Data Project

Dataset

Description

The Empathy Data Project (EM-DATA) is an open-access data hub that provides access to both published and unpublished empathy measures across diverse populations.

The purpose is to promote transparency, enable secondary analyses, and broadly support scientific and educational projects while minimising participant burden. By including unpublished datasets, EM-DATA can accelerate piloting for new research studies on empathy across different populations and measures, and combat potential publication bias.

The collection includes datasets from a variety of research studies, including student projects. Data are available for scientific and educational purposes, but some datasets are unpublished for reasons such as incomplete data or the need for further validation. Users should therefore treat these datasets with caution. They may still be used in individual analyses or publications, provided the data are carefully assessed for suitability and their limitations clearly acknowledged; but they are best interpreted as part of broader analyses across multiple datasets or studies.

Currently, all datasets on EM-DATA include the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) empathy measure and accompanying descriptive data. Another frequently included empathy measure is the Reading the Mind in the Eyes test (RMET).

Each study includes participant data from different cohorts, often from experts in specific fields.

If you wish to work with these datasets or publish findings that include them, please cite EM-DATA. If you would like to contribute to EM-DATA with your own data, contact Corinne Jola for further information.
