These data were collected as part of a PhD project funded by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF.
The study was carried out to develop a framework for a sustainable waste management system for market waste in LEDCs, building on the existing waste management system in urban markets. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from two markets (Utako and Garki), municipal waste agencies, public health department, trade union and informal workers. A detailed methodology is presented in Chapter 6 of the thesis.
Additionally, Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) was adopted as the conceptual model for the study, which investigated solid waste management behaviours by utilising the model’s threat and coping appraisals. It was found that while individuals recognise the health risks of improper waste disposal, their actions reflect low self-efficacy and response efficacy, emphasising the need for targeted environmental knowledge and awareness initiatives.
