Personal profile

I joined Dundee Business School in January 2012, having spent the previous 15 years at Dundee & Angus College as a senior lecturer and programme leader.

Previously, I held senior HR management positions within the private and public sectors, working for organisations as diverse as British Aerospace and Local Government.

As well as providing academic support, I enjoy helping students to take the first steps onto the career ladder. I remain in contact with an extensive network of former students, many of whom have assisted me as guest lecturers and workshop facilitators, bringing a sense of workplace reality into the classroom. This enables students to see the link between academic theory and organisational practice.

From a research perspective, I’m interested in the role of HR within new media sectors. I’m currently involved in a joint project looking at the added value that HR can bring to entertainment and gaming SMEs.

I am a Fellow of the CIPD and a member of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)

As a volunteer committee member on the Mid-Scotland Branch of the CIPD, I’m regularly involved in organising events, arranging speakers and assisting with strategic planning.

Professional Membership

I became a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, CIMA in 1984 and have served on the CIMA Dundee Branch Committee for many years  www.cimaglobal.com . Since 2013 I have been CIMA Dundee Branch President. A varied programme of events are offered each year and I encourage my students to attend these.


My primary teaching responsibilities are at 4th year undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

4th Year undergraduate Modules

I teach the following modules - MT1017A Strategic Human Resource Management; MT1025A Human Resource Development; MT1035A Employee Relations. MT1018A Dissertation; MT1011A Practical Business Project.

Postgraduate Modules (MSc)

MT1110A Managing Performance;  MT1111A Human Resource Management; MT1128A Contemporary Human Resource Management; MT1141A Reward Management; MT1144A Managing and Building Human Capital; MT1147A HRM Dissertation. I have also acted as dissertation supervisor for MSc Students studying Oil and Gas Management.

Work-based Learning Modules

I am the designated module tutor for work-based learning within Dundee Business School and as such responsible for any student (undergraduate or postgraduate) undertaking a module in work-based learning mode. 

Research interests

I am currently working on a joint venture researching the role of HR and the added value that HR can bring to SMEs in the entertainment and gaming business sector.

Knowledge Exchange

Tayside Branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

Volunteer committee member on the Tayside Branch of the CIPD with responsibility for organising speakers, events and assisting with strategic planning.


I am the designated lead contact between the Dundee Business School and the CIPD for all matters to do with the continuing professional accreditation of our MSc in HRM.
