I joined Abertay from the Robert Gordon University where I was a Lecturer in Forensic Science.

Previously, I was as a Forensic Scientist with Strathclyde Police for 13 years – five of those as a Senior Forensic Scientist.  I’ve also worked as a method development scientist with a large pharmaceutical company.

My research interests include trace, contact and transfer evidence analysis as well as substances of abuse.

I’ve carried out a couple of knowledge exchange projects with the Police Forensic Science Laboratory in Dundee, the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency and the Specialist Crime Division of Police Scotland.

I’m also involved in outreach work including the Dundee Science Festival and the Scottish Science Baccalaureate Scheme. 

I’m an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Teaching

Teaching specialisms include the analysis and interpretation of paint and glass evidence together with the application of different analytical techniques and legislation to forensic and pharmaceutical sciences.

Research interests

Research interests are in the areas of trace, contact and transfer evidence analysis as well as substances of abuse. 

I am currently supervising a R-Lincs PhD studentship looking at the  'The Chemical and Physical Characterisation of Illicit Tablets and the Development of a Statistical Model to Identify Populations Within the Illegal Supply Chain'. This project involves collaborative work with both the Specialist Crime Division of Police Scotland and the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

Knowledge Exchange

Outreach

In 2003 I worked with Tayside Education Department, GlaxoSmithKline Montrose, and Tayside Police to secure a partnership grant from the Royal Society to allow a project ‘Good Medicines - Bad Drugs’ to run at a local Dundee primary school.

I have taken part in the Scottish Science Baccalaureate Scheme and have co supervised a project ‘Drink, Driving, Drugs and the Law’
