Personal profile

Before joining Abertay University in 2016, I was a Post-Doctoral research fellow at Trinity College Dublin examining the effect of age and sex on the time course and mechanisms of adaptation in cardiovascular and metabolic health with exercise training in type 2 diabetes.

I completed my degree in Sports Science and Physical Education at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2007 before moving to the UK to study an MSc in Sports Science at Loughborough University.

While at Loughborough, I undertook a research project on the effects of high-intensity aerobic exercise on the appetite-regulating hormone acylated ghrelin.

I hold a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University on the effects of exercise on hunger, food intake and physical activity energy expenditure.

Currently, my research interests include:

  • Metabolic adaptations and exercise tolerance in Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and ageing
  • Exercise and appetite control
  • Physical activity and sedentary behaviour


Joel's teaching focuses on the areas of exercise physiology, physical activity and health.

Research interests

Joel's research interests fit mainly within the broad area of physical activity and health, however, he also welcomes any enquiries with regards to potential collaborations in the area of human performance.


Main areas of interest include:

- Metabolic adaptations and exercise tolerance in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and ageing

- Exercise and appetite control

- Physical activity and sedentary behaviour


Student supervision

Joel has experience supervising master's and PhD students and welcomes enquiries from prospective research students in any of the above areas of research.
