Personal profile

I’m a Structural Engineer with a strong research background in structural dynamics. 

I joined Abertay as a lecturer in 2016 having previously worked for the global consultancy Atkins where I dealt primarily with the structural integrity of offshore platforms in the North Sea.  During this time I was awarded Northern Research Partnership funding in collaboration with the University of Dundee to assess the behaviour of corrugated steel panels used in offshore modules under blast loads. 

My research is mainly focused on using advanced numerical methods for finding structural response during dynamic events, such as earthquakes, blast and impact. My interests lie in complex and detailed finite element analysis and coding improvements to existing software. I was a member of the EU funded Prohitec  (Protecting of Historical Buildings by Reversible Mixed Technologies) research team  investigating  the advantages of seismic upgrading using super elastic Shape Memory Alloys. My PhD research dealt with assessing the behaviour of reinforced concrete columns under blast loads.

I vastly enjoy my work as a lecturer and in 2017 I was nominated as ‘Outstanding Teacher’ in the student-led teaching awards. I’ve also previously received the Langlat Award for Excellence in teaching and have been voted five times for a best tutor award in my previous role as a teaching assistant

I’m a chartered member of the ICE and a member of the Women’s Engineering Society.

EMPLOYMENT

5/2016 – present: Programme Leader for BSc(Hons) Civil Engineering and Lecturer in Structural Engineering- Abertay University

3/2012 – 5/2016: Structural Engineer- Atkins

I was a structural engineer within Atkins Energy department’s centre of excellence for advanced analysis. My job primarily dealt with structural integrity assessment of offshore structures.

2005 – 2008: Prohitec Researcher

I was a member of the EC funded Prohitec research group – Protecting of Historical Buildings by reversible mixed Technologies. I studied the advantages of seismic upgrading using super elastic Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) by means of nonlinear numerical analysis using the Abaqus finite element code and implementing a user defined material for the SMA elements. I used both finite elements and discrete elements to simulate the different types of structures investigated.

2005 – 2008: Teaching Assistant, Technion - Israeli Institute of Technology (ranked 25th worldwide in Structural Engineering)

Modules taught: Engineering Mechanics, Earthquake Engineering and Steel Structures.

I acted as head of tutorials in Engineering Mechanics, with responsibility for planning tutorials, homework, final exams and maintaining the course website. I was responsible for delegating tasks to the other tutors, and making sure all requirements and deadlines were met with regards to teaching and administrative issues. 

Research interests

My research is mainly focused on using advanced numerical methods for the investigation of the behaviour of structures during dynamic events, such as earthquakes, blast and impact. My interests lie in complex and detailed finite element analysis and coding improvements to existing software. I was a member of the EU funded Prohitec  (Protecting of Historical Buildings by Reversible Mixed Technologies) research team  investigating  the advantages of seismic upgrading using super elastic Shape Memory Alloys. My PhD research dealt with assessing the behaviour of reinforced concrete columns under blast loads. Additionally, I worked for the global engineering consultancy Atkins in their oil and gas advanced analysis team. During my time at Atkins I was awarded Northern Research Partnership funding in collaboration with the University of Dundee to assess the behaviour of corrugated steel panels used in offshore modules under blast loads.
