Abstract

Anaerobic digestion provides an alternative treatment method for organic residues for resource recovery and for environmental pollution prevention and control. The key co-products include bioenergy in the form of biogas and organic fertilizer in the form of nutrient rich digestate. This article provides an overview of the process and the key operating parameters. Disposal and re-use options for the co-products are also addressed. The article concludes with suggestions of key considerations for an effective application of the process.
