This chapter addresses the role of microbicides (biocides) in the decontamination and disinfection of clinical instruments and clinical environments. The chapter investigates the current advice given to and by local NHS trusts in the UK and the role of governmental and European Union regulation in the testing and use of such biocides. The chapter also outlines a set of principles designed to allow the infection control practitioner to identify suitable biocides for use in varying clinical situations.
