Business sustainability adoption by Ghanaian women entrepreneurs

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Sustainability adoption among businesses is a priority for a range of stakeholders. The UN's sustainable development goals drive adoption among a range of sectors and motivate academic interest. While much investigation of sustainability adoption has focused on corporations and developed countries, more attention needs to be paid to emerging markets, a gap that is being addressed by this study. This study makes three main contributions. It provides insights to businesses and entrepreneurs about designing sustainability into their operations. Secondly, we are giving policymakers an understanding of the barriers that exist and the importance of creating a facilitating environment for sustainable adoption in businesses. Thirdly, the study shows academics a practical application of the use of Sustainable Design Theory from the context of women entrepreneurs in Ghana. Using a quantitative method of questionnaires, the study finds a positive correlation between thinking of the environmental and social impact of a business with planning and implementing sustainable actions within a company.
