Abstract

This study provides valuable insights into New Zealand pet owners and suggests that veterinarians can take action to gain a greater share of the growing pet food market. For instance, while only a small number of owners ask others about pet food, those who do are most likely to ask veterinarians. When providing other medial services to pets, veterinarians have an opportunity to talk to owners about the best nutritional options for their pets and could therefore increase the amount of pet food that is currently purchased in-clinic. Talking to pet owners about nutrition may also increase the lifespans of pets, therefore positively affecting the potential revenue from veterinary care provided.
