This study aims to review the characteristics of mixed methods designs. Leadership theories/approaches are also offered to understand how mixed methods designs have been used and how they could be used in future research. This study reviews mixed methods designs in sport management practices. The articles reviewed in the current study were published in the Journal of Sport Management (1986-2016), Sport Management Review (1998-2016), European Sport Management Quarterly (2001-2016), and International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing (2005-2016). The results revealed that mixed methods design is not widely adopted to investigate and understand sport leadership in sport management practices. Specifically, the review revealed that leadership theories/approaches are not covered by researchers in sport contexts. Effective sport leadership may occur by investigating leadership theories/approaches, using mixed methods designs in sport context to understand the effective application of particular theory/approach.
