Abstract
"Game On - Museum LATE" was a site-specific, one-night event at the National Museum of Scotland. Curation of the games and playful installations was led by Clare Brennan and included original digital-physical games designed by Abertay practitioners Lynn Love, Mona Bozdog, Kayleigh Macleod and Clare Brennan.
The event invited members of the public to engage and play with games and playful installations. The selected interactive experiences and experimental games were born out of Abertay Game Lab and were chosen specifically for their reflections and explorations of themes surrounding culture, heritage and public engagement. This includes:
Tale of Monstrous InTent; A collaborative, survival horror installation played in a tent, which aims to create links between players through narrative devices, intimacy and interdependent play.
Game Designer; a design tool inspired by mini golf. Players are invited to build, play and iterate upon their own life size courses in the museum. The tool encourages players to change the layout of their courses, the ways the game is played, and the obstacles and rules used to create a fun and engaging play experience.
Waulking Simulator; a rhythm game that brings the traditional Scottish practice of waulking tweed to life through interactive play. Rooted in communal song and labour, waulking was a vital cultural practice for preparing woven cloth—one that carried stories, traditions, and language through generations.
Dance Floor Memories; immersive installation designed to encourage visitors to revisit their favourite moments on the dance floor through music and movement. Bringing together elements of cooperative play, nostalgic storytelling and social dance.
