Statistical properties of turbulence in estuaries

    Abstract

    The understanding and prediction of the effects of engineering works on the flow of water and the transport of suspended solids in estuaries can be facilitated by using mathematical models. The solution of the transport equations for momentum or suspended solids is often strongly influenced by turbulent fluctuations which may be generated by a channel bed, by wind or internally. It is important to understand the properties of turbulence in estuaries if a full utilization is to be made of the potential of mathematical models to predict the effect of engineering works on estuarine environment.
